Medical Achievement The Medical Achievement Award recognizes physicians in our communities who have contributed to the the advancement of medical care in billings and the surrounding region.  Nominations are received from physicians from throughout the region. L.W. "Mac" Baskett, MD Dr. Baskett is described as a true native Montana country doctor.  Talk to anyone in Livingston and they will speak with great affection for the man who was in the delivery room when they were born, cared for parents and grandparents, and may even have delivered their grandchildren. A staff person described Dr. Baskett "as a man with nice gentlemanly ways the old fashioned kind."  He is a fine employer and a very conscientious physician who always went the extra mile for his patients.  They knew if he wasn't worried about a patient then there was notion to worry about.  He still practices the old fashioned values and even now will make a house call. The son of a "country doctor," Dr. Baskett grew up in Big Timber.  He received his medical training at Northwestern University and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.  Just before his discharge, a letter arrived from Livingston physician offering him a temporary position.  By 1953 he was back home in Montana, and he has been here ever since. Dr. Baskett, "Mac" as he is affectionately called, began his medical practice before today's myriad of different antibiotics were discovered, long before the phenomenal growth of technology, before HMO/PPO's, and believes we will see zillions more changes.  He feels the changes brought about as a result of cardiovascular surgery is at the top of the "new advances" list. Never regretting his decision to be a physician. Dr. Baskett speaks with great fondness for the 500+ babies he delivered.  He often saw up to 40 patients a day along with hospital rounds and house calls.  Today he sees patients 2-3 days a week - "a very easy work load because there is no call or hospital rounds involved any more."  And yet, having lived nearly eight decades, he isn't ready to retire because, "After all," he asks, "What would I do?"
