Ownership Poll (April 2001)
A poll conducted by a group promoting home ownership found Americans prefer to buy homes rather than invest in stock or bonds. A poll of 1500 adults conducted for the Homeownership Alliance found 87% saw buying a home as good investment and would make sacrifices such as living farther away from their jobs or sending their child to a less costly college in order to do so.
"The results show that Americans place a high value on homeownership and want us to do more," said Rick Davis, president of the advocacy group. Members of the group include Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, as well as the American League of Financial Institutions, the National Association of Home Builders, and the National Urban League.
While homeownership may be associated with financial risks, such as the costs of upkeep or declines in neighborhood home values, many people opt to buy because the want to live in a stable neighborhood or close to good schools, Davis said at a press conference.See Sue's Archives for more "Sue's News"
